Martin Fessenmaier, Ph.D.

Martin FessenmaierMartin Fessenmaier has extensive expertise in preparation and prosecution of national and international patent applications, patentability and infringement opinions, patent portfolio analysis and strategy, and direction of foreign associates in prosecution of international patent applications. Martin has represented numerous corporate and individual inventors, predominantly in the fields of organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, medical devices, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, and general mechanical arts. Clients representative of his practice include AutoGenomics, Fluor Corporation, Honeywell International, ICN Pharmaceuticals, Performance Fibers, Ribapharm, and the University of California, Irvine.

Martin further focuses his practice on educating current and prospective clients to identify patentable subject matter from an invention- and market-oriented perspective, and working with his clients to maintain alignment of claim coverage with the often fluid market demands and new product developments.

Previous Experience

Martin joined Fish & Associates as a scientific consultant in January 1999 and was admitted to represent clients before the USPTO in September 2000. In January 2002, Fish & Associates joined Rutan & Tucker until March 2007, when Fish & Associates took up practice again as an IP boutique firm in Orange County.

Before joining the firm, Martin took on the position of a project leader in a San Diego biotechnology firm, developing various diagnostic test kits for analytes from biological fluids.

He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology in 1993 magna cum laude at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and was awarded in 1994 a DFG research grant for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.  Prior to this, Martin graduated from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, with a M.S. in Biology with a focus on genetics, physiology, biochemistry and organic chemistry.
