Creating a Patent Thicket
A "patent thicket" is a complex of overlapping claims designed to deter competitors from both infringing and challenging one's patents. The thicket is best developed using a considered strategy that includes multiple types of claims, multiple terminologies, multiple conceptual approaches, and multiple claim scopes. A good patent thicket transforms a wide-open space into a seer land that is completely inhospitable to competitors.
